I’m Alright – Installation

The I’m Alright app is available on Google Play.  It currently is only available for smartphones running Android 5 and higher (from about Nov 2014 forward).  It is not supported for Apple (iOS) at this time.

To install, locate the app on Google Play Store and select Install.

Terms of Use

Before installing the app, review the terms of usage and End User License Agreement (EULA) for the app.  A checkbox is included in the installation process to indicate acceptance of the EULA terms.  If you elect not to accept the EULA terms, do not check the checkbox.  If acceptance is not indicated via the checkbox, the installation will not proceed.

The End User License Agreement is located at

Data Safety

No data is collected for use outside of the application.

During setup, the user specifies up to three phone numbers to receive alerts in the event that an inactivity alarm is triggered.  These phone numbers are stored internally in the application and are not visible outside of the user’s smart phone.  The app does not access the user’s contact list within the phones Contact app.

Optionally, the user can include location information within any alerts sent to the user’s contact list.  Location information is only generated in the event of an inactivity alert and is sent only to the app’s contact list.

Android Permissions

The I’m Alright app requests two permissions during installation:  SEND_SMS (text messaging) and ACCESS_LOCATION (GPS location determination).  The user will be prompted to grant permissions during the initial start up of the app.

SEND_SMS is required for the app to function.  Without this permission, the app would not be able to send alerts to the contact list.  If this permission is denied, an explanation will be provided and the app will stop.  If SMS permission is not allowed, the app should be uninstalled.

ACCESS_LOCATION is optional.  If this permission is denied, the app’s location determination logic will be disabled but the app will still operate and provide inactivity alerts but omit location information.  Location services can also be switched ON and OFF via the settings screen.

Additional Android Settings

I’m Alright’s programming consists of two components.  The user interface that is visible on the screen and a ‘background service’ that operates invisible to the user but is responsible for performing the actual activity monitoring.  The visible portion of I’m Alright is typically used only during app start-up, shutdown, changing settings, and issuing manual “I’m Alright” assurance/informational messages.  The visible user interface may be closed when not in use without affecting the app’s operation.  The foreground service, however, must keep running.

IMPORTANT: It has been observed that the Android system may arbitrarily decide to stop the monitoring process.  Android does not notify the user that the app has stopped working.

Most Android versions have settings available to “optimize” battery usage.  The Android system will scan idle applications and can terminate apps that are deemed to be idle and for which “optimization” is enabled.  By default, optimization is enabled for all apps.  I’m Alright has little impact on system resources, including battery life.  Optimization should be disabled for the I’m Alright app to help guard against premature shutdown.

This behavior can be controlled on a per app basis.  TO GUARD AGAINST THIS HAPPENING, THE APP SHOULD BE EXEMPTED FROM MOST OF THE ANDROID “OPTIMIZING” BY TURNING OFF BATTERY OPTIMIZATION.  A HELPFUL LINK IS
